Contra-Tiempo is a Los Angeles-based activist dance company,
founded and directed by Ana Maria Alvarez. It is dedicated to
transforming the world through dance. Their unique urban Latin
dance theater brings to life voices that are not traditionally heard
on the concert stage. This evening will feature two works from the
company’s repertoire. I Dream America is a movement opera,
which primarily seeks to engage the tensions, commonalities,
strains, and histories between the Black and Latino communities
and Against the Times will tackle salsa dancing and flip the
concept of who leads who.
Damian’s note: Contra-Tiempo is a great company with a unique style. They (like Sweet Plantain on page 17) blend
a lot of styles with a Latin influence. I know our area deals with a lot of the same concepts Contra-Tiempo is trying to
tackle in I Dream America. They will bring an important voice to the dialogue.
