Renowned puppeteer and political satirist Paul Zaloom unleashes
his latest solo comic puppet extravaganza at the CenterStage. The evening will consist of two parts: In Adventures of White-Man, Zaloom employs the old school, drawing room medium of toy theatre to tell the story of the archetypical “white man” and his universe. We see White-Man leave his planet Caucazoid, travel through space, discover and “civilize” the earth (populated with aliens), become a philanthropist and savior, and finally, get really scared and angry as hell about his approaching minority status. The puppet cast of the show is drawn from the gigantic collection of knick-knacks and brick-a-brac collected by the artist over the years: action figures, toy cars, dolls, found objects, weird junk, and more. Just Another Other is a dangerous and combative dialog between Zaloom and a ventriloquist dummy. Zaloom bought the puppet sight-unseen on eBay, the box has just arrived, and the puppeteer unpacks the dummy in front of the audience. Since he’s been in storage for 60 years, the dummy will be brought up-to-date by Zaloom on what’s been going on in the intervening years: the Internet, medical marijuana, face transplants, gay marriage, and, in particular, a black president. The dummy will flip out, particularly about the latter, as he turns out to be an unapologetic racist.

Damian’s note: Paul Zaloom is one of the most important
performance artists in the country and I am pleased that I can
bring his satirical work back to the CenterStage. This is an evening
of adult language, themes and material.
