RESTON COMMUNITY CENTER HUNTERS WOODS
REOPENS ON SATURDAY NOVEMBER 1ST, 2008

RESTON, VA — Reston Community Center Hunters Woods reopens on Saturday November 1st, 2008, following the completion of the third and final phase of the Reston Community Center’s HVAC renovation project which has taken five months to complete.   In addition, during the period the facility was closed, the Terry L. Smith Aquatics Center underwent a complete renovation and deck replacement project.  The pool area opened on Thursday, October 23rd, to patrons of its drop-in programs.  There will be some continuing work in both project areas completed over the coming weeks, but both reached substantial completion on time and on budget and have been cleared by the multi-part inspection processes for the public to return and programming in most building areas to resume.

During the closure, RCC On the Road strategically relocated programs throughout Reston.  “We want to extend a heartfelt thanks to the community partners who helped us serve Reston throughout the period of our closure.  They exemplify the community spirit that makes Reston such a special place,” said Bill Bouie, RCC Board Chair.

Bill Bouie added, “This final phase of the renovation project significantly improves the comfort of patrons of the center by providing far greater control over individual areas of temperatures (both cooling and heating.)  Some areas of the building have been modified to provide for better use of office and program space.  There is a new entrance to the photo lab that separates access from the adjacent meeting room.  A security door is being added to the pool overlook area and the adjacent office has been enlarged to better accommodate the RCC program staff.  In addition, we also introduced a more modern design to the Terry L. Smith Aquatics Center.  This world-class indoor swimming facility is now available to all Reston residents and employees for learn to swim classes, swim team training, therapeutic and recreational swimming.  This was the first time we have ever undertaken such an extensive renovation and system replacement set of projects and closed the building to get the work done in as fast and comprehensive a manner as possible.

The just-completed renovations and HVAC replacement project represent the first time the entire Hunters Woods building has been closed to accommodate capital projects.  Doing so saved money and allowed for the simultaneous completion of work that would otherwise have created scheduling challenges for a much longer stretch of time.  RCC Board and staff worked to minimize the impact on programs and long-term patrons by scheduling the projects during summer months when many users are in other locations or on hiatus until September.  Pent up demand for use of the meeting spaces and other facilities at Hunters Woods means that almost all facility space available for rent is currently booked.

Other improvements and new features resulting from the projects include:  Dectron Conversion to electronic controls (humidity control in the aquatics areas), upgraded data/voice cabling (phone and computer speed), and installation of a new fire alarm system.

“We anticipate all construction and punch list issues to be complete and resolved by the end of November,” says Leila Gordon, RCC Executive Director.  “The remaining work will not disrupt any activities; and we are looking forward to being able to serve the public as scheduled from here forward.  We are so thankful for the patience of our patrons, user groups, and for the continuous efforts of our staff and project teams to move the construction forward to completion.  We also appreciate the special experience we all had being “headquartered” in beautiful Lake Anne Village Center, as well as the wonderful settings provided by our program partners throughout Reston.  It is very fitting that we will begin our 30th Anniversary celebrations in a Hunters Woods facility that has been so successfully improved.”

The Center has played a major role in the life of Reston residents and employees for and has been a focal point for community events and activities since it first opened in 1979. More than a dozen community groups regularly use it.  Founding Partners include Reston Chorale, Reston Community Players, Reston Community Orchestra, local chapter of the Jack & Jill of America, Christ the Servant Lutheran Church, Fairfax Loudoun Music Fellowship and Reston Conservatory Ballet.   Many other community organizations make regular use of meeting space at both Hunters Woods and Reston Community Center’s Lake Anne facility.

The Reston Community Center Hunters Woods is located at 2310 Colts Neck Road Reston, Virginia 20191.  The Center is open from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sundays.
